Five Guys rocks!

Leaving Best Buy the other day I noticed a new burger joint called “Five Guys” was opening up – how exciting. My friend Jason beat me to the punch and ate there at least twice before I got around to telling Erin about it and of course we were instantly out the door and headed there for dinner. The place is great – simple menu, fresh ingredients and it knows what it is – a burger joint, that simple. It reminded me of In-n-Out in California but the dining area is far less fast food in appearance.

While waiting in line there is a big box of peanuts you can snack on, which Ella loved. She loves all nuts, but I don’t think she had cracked peanuts out of their shell before – she was very excited to find them easier then the Pistachios we have at home.

I ordered the Cheeseburger with onions and jalapenos and Erin ordered one with whatever (they have a lot of fun topping choices) and we got Ella her usual plain burger. I had already been clued in that the regular fry is enough to feed 2-3 people so we shared one of those. They fill a cup with fries and then put like two extra scoops in the bag – so if you love “bag fries” this is the place for you.

It was delicious! The “cheeseburgers” are in fact doubles – but not obscenely large. I don’t typically order doubles but am usually dissatisfied with a single small burger – so these were perfect. (Although on my first visit I did get a second “little cheeseburger” (a single) just to be sure they really were as delicious as I thought – they were. On my next visit one was plenty – I learned that I just needed to eat it slower and not inhale it.)

Funny thing is that who should wander into Five Guys while we were trying it out for the first time – Jason. I guess he loves the place.

So after telling another friend, Mark, about the Five Guys yesterday he asked me to lunch today and there was no hesitation in heading there for another round of burger heaven. I am sure the whole family will go back too soon – and odds are both Jason and Mark will both be there.

Bounce Mania

We took the girls to Bounce Mania the other day and it was a lot of fun. Bounce Mania is a huge room filled with inflatable bounce houses, obstacle courses and slides. Of course in our typical modus operandi we realized half way there that Ella was wearing sandals without socks, which are required to play on the inflatables. So we stopped and bought her some socks at Mejier and then when we got there we had the place to ourselves. I bought a $2 pair of socks from the Hockey supply store so Erin and I could take turns playing with Ella. It was fun, Erin and I both got wicked friction burns on our elbows from trying to slow ourselves down on the giant slide. But I think Erin had as much fun as Ella since A.) she was screaming louder then Ella on her way down the slide and B.) she wouldn’t give me the socks back!

Torus is better then Tetris!

While doing some research on a new evolution of programming called HTML5, I stumbled across a really addictive game.

It is a 3D twist on the classic Tetris:

Remember when you find yourself playing for an hour and not working – I warned you!

Super Wipes

How do you know when your three-year-old might be watching too much television? When she comes up with her own commercial!

Today Erin and Ella visited me in my office so they could act out the commercial Ella came up with. Here is the script:

ERIN: “Oh, no. I spilled spaghetti sauce on the carpet. How will I clean it up”

ELLA: Holding out a wet wipe. “Super Wipes! They will clean anything out of the carpet.” Pretends to wipe up floor and hold it up to show it worked.

How creative is that?

Shrek, Sherlock Holmes and Tetro

Its funny whenever I do these three movie reviews at a time they are always such radically different movies.

Shrek Forever After

Even though they said Shrek 3 was the final one, they came out with one more. I guess its hard ot turn off the gravy train. What can I say about this movie? Nothing, its just another Shrek movie – the first one was good, but they have gone downhill with each installment. That said, it was still fun, we saw it at the Cinema Grill where we can have dinner during the movie. It was the first time we took Eva to the movies, of course about 5 minutes in we remembered that Eva is not a quiet baby – she is in fact a really , really loud baby who likes to scream a lot. Sure, they are happy screams, but still no screams in the theater are good, so Erin ended up walking net door to Target while Ella and I stayed. Something tells me Erin enjoyed Target more anyway. The other day, Ella and I had a conversation where we recounted the many films we had seen in the theater together – it was pretty fun to already be reminiscing with my daughter.

Sherlock Holmes

I have been wanting to see this for some time now, so was very excited to finally get to it after many near misses. I was curious to see what Guy Ritchie could do with some heavy hitters like Robert Downy and Jude Law. Well, it was classic Guy Ritchie style – so much so it seemed like I was watching reruns of past movies at times – the bare-knuckle boxing scene with Downey was a total redo of Brad Pitt’s scene in Snatch. The film was entertaining – it had action and humor. Nothing amazing, just fun.

Tetro

This was a true cinematic fan’s film. Francis Ford Coppola directing a character piece starring Vincent Gallo, come on? This was Coppola’s first original screenplay since 1974 (The Conversation), and is based on his own memories and emotions, although twisted into a fictional tale. Very fascinating film, with a lot of stylistic swings. I very much enjoyed it, but . Roger Ebert eloquently called the film “boldly operatic”.

What a great family weekend

This weekend was very relaxing and family-focused, we spent a lot of time out of the house doing stuff. The first trip was strawberry picking at a farm in Leo. Ella loved it, she was very deliberate about which strawberries she would pick and which ones she would not put in her bucket.

Just as we walked back to our car it started to rain so we drove into town and ate at a cute little diner – I think it was called Leo Cafe? Anyway, food was great – I ate the MacDaddy burger – yum. The waitress tipped me in on an off-the-menu double version of this called the Bypass. Not sure I will be trying that one.

After lunch we headed home and were driving down a country road, right after the rain stopped, and we passed a house with 5 huge vultures stalking around the roof. Yes, I said vultures. They were holding their wings spread open in a very bizarre and haunting way. We ended up sitting in the road watching until cars came and then we drove off, just to turn around and go back to gawk some more.

Once we were home awhile, the sun had come back out so Ella and I took a swim in the neighborhood pool. It was just our second time there since it opened Memorial weekend, but I think the pool is going to be a regular thing for us this summer. It was really cool, when Ella discovered that she can actually stand in the shallow end on her tippy toes.

The next day, we visited some parks in Auburn – after picking up a strawberry shake for Ella – not sure where she got that idea, shes usually a vanilla girl. At the park, Ella and I enjoyed watching twigs and leafs race down the river from one side of the bridge to another – she is so into the things I love. After I was wore out of climbing on the jungle gyms and squeezing down curly slides clearly not designed for full-grown men, we retreated to the swings. Ah, is there anything better then swings? Ella and I even spider swung for some time – she wanted to go higher and higher and higher. Erin admitted that sometimes it feels like she is the mom taking all three of her kids to the playground.

We then visited Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. I had never been there and was amazed by the place. According to their website, they are “a non-profit exotic animal sanctuary, a ‘last chance’ refuge for captive-raised non-domestic animals in need.” Since it’s out in the middle of nowhere I did not expect the variety of animals they had – lions, tigers, leopards, bears, monkeys, etc. Each animal has story of how they ended up there and why they were rescued. It’s also a little different being so close to such big cats only separated by some wire fencing, we were slightly unnerved that we could be eaten at any moment. Otherwise it was great.

Afterward, we took a really long drive through Avilla, Garrett and Albion among other little towns trying to find a restaurant, but after finding four closed places we realized folks in those towns don’t eat out on Sundays. I am too embarrassed to admit where we ended up eating, lets just say Ella was very “happy” to get a “meal” with a Shrek toy in it. Oh, well we tried.

So all in all, a fantastic family weekend.

CAKE is coming! CAKE is coming!

About two years ago I signed up for the alt rock band Cake’s email newsletter hoping that someday they would actually play a Midwest show. Well this morning I opened their email update and there it was: July 11 – Indianapolis, IN @ The Vogue

Tickets went on sale at 10am this morning and I rung up two of them at about 10:15! Yay – I am going to see Cake! (Kevo is going with me, since Erin is unable)

So, why am I so excited? Well, back in the fall of 1996 I saw this video and the song has ever since been in my music library and any mp3 player. But it wasn’t until years later it dawned on me to check out their other songs and was amazed. Of all the bands I like, they are one of the few if not the only one that I truly enjoy listening to every song they have ever recorded – that is unusual! Usually there are a few stinkers in the bunch, I mean even my favorite album of all time, The Wall by Pink Floyd, an album that I consider to be nearly a perfect art form has “Dirty Women (Young Lust)” that seemed wildly out of place.

In case The Distance is not your thing (which I am sure it is not for everyone), at least go to Groove Shark and listen to a few of their songs:

Eva’s first swing at the park

Big sis Ella, giving Eva her first swing down at the park.

(It was also Erin’s first video shot and sent via email from her phone, pretty good quality I would say, score another one for Palm Pre)

Ah, Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial weekend has become the one and only time each year that we host a big blowout. Friends and family come from all over to just relax and enjoy.

Half the day is lots of kids running around in the sun enjoying sprinklers and slip-n-slides, while the adults sit in the shade eating burgers and drinking beers. At night, the kids go off to bed while the adults enjoy a campfire.

This was our fourth or fifth year and it was wonderful again – its so nice to spend some time with friends with nothing on the agenda except hanging out. Its funny that the first year, hardly anyone had kids, and now we almost all do. Its fun to interact with each others kids and get to know them as they get older each year.

Anyways, now that it is over, I can start to look forward to it again next year. (Unless of course, I am able to convince Erin to add Labor Day weekend to the tradition)

What’chya talkin’ about, Willis?

I am saddened to hear that Gary Coleman died today at age 42.

I know he had a troubled adulthood, but his childhood years as an entertainer were influential. So much so my daughter says Arnold Jackson’s famous catch phrase “What’chya talkin’ about, Willis?”, even though she was born over 20 years after Diff’rent Strokes ended its 7-year run on television.

Here is more about his passing on ABC News
